Mighty Mistake #3: Mindless Awareness

Then you may be making this third Mighty Mistake. OK, by now you’ve got a good grasp of how an Uninspired Motivation and an Unloving Attitude can really get in the way of the healthy life you want.

And yet there are still a couple of hurdles that can easily get in the way of taking care of yourself: one of these is Mindless Awareness.

What does it mean?

Well, imagine that you’ve found what truly inspires you and have built a vision for yourself that was so exciting you could not help but take daily action towards it.

Then imagine that you are also aware that all the fears, beliefs and insecurities you had been telling yourself for years were in fact not real, and that you have the power to create whatever you set your mind to.

Now imagine that you’ve had a stressful day at work and your mind was churning over, processing and analysing each situation likes there’s no tomorrow. You barely notice the fact that you’ve arrived home and are headed straight for the fridge. And you barely taste the crisps and chocolate as you attempt to empty your head by watching some crappy E! special*.

Sound familiar?

Well that my friend is a perfect example of Mindless Awareness: being so stuck in your thoughts and feelings that you’re unable to make any conscious choices. Instead, your subconscious mind takes over and you begin to run old automatic habits. Again. And again. And again.

You see, every second of every minute of every hour of every day of every month of every year is the opportunity for you to make a step towards the life you want. But how are you going to do so if you’re stuck on autopilot?

Developing a Mindful Awareness

Mindful Awareness is a practice. A daily and consistent commitment to staying present and embodied as much as you can.

The goal is not to get it perfect or to get it right the first time around. The goal is simply to make progress.

In her book E-squared, author Pam Grout compares teaching your mind to training a puppy: you have to constantly bring it back into the room, treating it with kindness and compassion yet a bit of firmness.


Learn to be conscious of your actions, moment by moment and day by day. Know that every single choice you make has a consequence for you and those around you. And teach yourself to stay in the present moment as much as possible.

Practice meditation, mindful movement, 5 Rhythms, Yoga, Tai Chi…whatever resonates with you.

Here are few quick steps to instantly bring you back to your body and the present moment:

  1. Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings: do a quick overview of what is currently going on, what you’re feeling or thinking and how it might be affecting your body
  2. Set your intention to connect to your body and to the present moment
  3. Connect to your breath and body: feel yourself from the inside out, notice the energy within you and how it shifts when you move your attention
  4. Notice your surroundings: use your 5 senses to smell, touch, see, hear and feel the world around you.
